Quantum Cascade Laser
The quantum cascade laser (QCL) is a semiconductor laser that can emit in the mid to far infrared range. Quantum cascade lasers are distinguished from other lasers by two features: unipolarity and cascade pattern.
Laser emission is achieved by inter-subband transition of a quantum confined structure, a quantum well, composed of a multitude of heterostructures. The multi-stage cascade scheme allows electrons to be recycled from one period to the next, contributing to the gain and emission of photons each time.
